Flick Wit - March 2008

There has been much talk over the last week of a very personal new-release film starring Kristin Davis. I, for one, am very suspicious. It’s not that I doubt the woman in the video is Davis – the resemblance is too striking, even if we are not so used to seeing prudish ‘Charlotte’ in such a position – it’s the timing of it all that is giving me pause.

Just over two months until Sex and the City: The Movie premieres, and up pops this sex scandal, revolving around one of its most loved stars. Call me crazy, but I’m quite certain HBO and New Line are capable of predicting the buzz such a leak would generate – and of using it to their advantage.

Yes, it’s pretty drastic, but it’s not the first time this has happened, after all…

Curious About 'Benjamin Button'

March 29th 2008 06:33
David Fincher’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ is intriguing me already. Due for release at the end of the year, the film stars Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett in a dark and unconventional love story.

Benjamin Button (Pitt) is born 80-years-old in 1919 and gets progressively younger as the years pass. If that wasn’t tricky enough, thirty years after his birth, Button falls in love with a 30-year-old woman, Daisy (Blanchett), causing many bizarre complications as time moves forward and the pair age in different directions.

I don’t quite understand how Fincher is going to pull this off – putting Brad Pitt’s face on a baby and making it look both elderly and convincing – but with a budget of $150 million, I’m sure he’ll have a fair stab at it. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button also stars Julia Ormond, Jason Flemyng, Tilda Swinton and Elle Fanning, with a cameo by Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, if you can believe it.

Five: You Can Leave Your Manolos On

March 14th 2008 18:03
Comparably short due to Sarah Jessica Parker’s pregnancy, Season Five of Sex and the City was all about moving on and accepting that nothing ever goes according to plan. The four girls have plenty to come to terms with: Samantha, her unexpected broken heart; Charlotte, her status as a divorcee; Miranda, motherhood; and Carrie… Big, Aidan, and learning that life – especially hers – can be very unpredictable.

Episode Sixty-Seven: ‘Anchors Away’
Director: Charles McDougall. Writer: Michael Patrick King.
What/Who Went Down: It’s Fleet Week, and the girls are momentarily distracted from their collective woes by the arrival of hordes of sailors. It doesn’t last long, however, as Carrie realises that she is not yet ready to date, Charlotte buys herself some time in her quest to find her next great love, Samantha realises her heart is still with Richard despite his infidelity, and Miranda tries to cope with breastfeeding.
Guest Starring: David Eigenberg, Lynn Cohen, James Remar, Mario Cantone, Daniel Sunjata.

Episode Sixty-Eight: ‘Unoriginal Sin’
Director: Charles McDougall. Writer: Cindy Chupak.
What/Who Went Down: Carrie, still not dating, is at a loss as to what to write. She avoids her editor’s requests to see her, thinking she’s going to be fired, only to find out Clearwater Press wants to make her columns into a book. Samantha is back with Richard, and although she doesn’t really trust him, she likes the enormous diamond he gives her. Charlotte goes to affirmation seminars, but finds that platitudes do little to mend a broken heart. Miranda gives in to Steve’s wish that they baptise Brady – after some heavy compromise, of course.
Guest Starring: David Eigenberg, Lynn Cohen, James Remar, Amy Sedaris, Molly Shannon, Anne Meara.

Episode Sixty-Nine: ‘Luck Be an Old Lady’
Director: John David Coles. Writers: Elisa Zuritsky, Julie Rottenberg.
What/Who Went Down: The girls go to Atlantic City to celebrate Charlotte’s 36th birthday, but Charlotte doesn’t want to rejoice, feeling more comfortable as a thirty-five year old. Meanwhile, Miranda feels insecure about her post-baby body, and Samantha feels insecure about her relationship with Richard, and breaks it off, knowing she can’t trust him. Carrie considers the risks of gambling, in the casino and in life.
Guest Starring: Steve Eigenberg, Lynn Cohen, James Remar.

Episode Seventy: ‘Cover Girl’
Director: John David Coles. Writers: Judy Toll, Michael Patrick King.
What/Who Went Down: Carrie and Samantha clash over ideas for Carrie’s book cover, after Carrie walks in on Sam giving the World Wide Express guy a blow-job. Charlotte looks for self-help books to aid her in getting on with her life. Miranda begins Weight Watchers where she meets a man who is an overeater, in every sense of the word.
Guest Starring: Willie Garson, Sean Palmer, Amy Sedaris, Craig Gass, Molly Shannon, Michael Zeppetello.

Episode Seventy-One: ‘Plus One is the Loneliest Number’
Director: Michael Patrick King. Writer: Cindy Chupak.
What/Who Went Down: Carrie is introduced to another writer, Jack Berger, whom she asks as her date to her book party, not realising he has a girlfriend. Miranda tries to reprise her love life as a single mother. Charlotte has an unwelcome surprise when Bunny arrives, intent on eviction. Samantha has a spur of the moment chemical peel.
Guest Starring: Ron Livingston, Willie Garson, Mario Cantone, Sean Palmer, Francis Sternhagen, Candice Bergen, Amy Sedaris, Robert John Burke, Isaac Mizrahi.

Episode Seventy-Three: ‘The Big Journey’
Director: Michael Engler. Writer: Michael Patrick King.
What/Who Went Down: Samantha accompanies Carrie on her book tour, taking a train to San Francisco. All Carrie wants is to have sex with Big when she meets him there, but he is inconveniently preoccupied with the details of her book. Charlotte sets some ground rules after having fantastic sex with Harry, who is far from her ideal man.
Guest Starring: Chris Noth, Evan Handler, Mario Cantone, Molly Shannon, Mr Winkle.

On the way, Carrie sees newly single Jack Berger, who, after becoming agitated at the thought of a new relationship, later changes his mind and comes to see Carrie at the reception. Meanwhile, Samantha throws a party at her ex-boyfriend’s house – and then throws a melon at some of Richard’s busty gatecrashing ‘friends’; Miranda worries that she has compromised her relationship with Steve after sleeping with him; and Charlotte admits that she is falling in love with Harry, despite his faults, and he tells her he is too, but must marry a Jew.
Guest Starring: Evan Handler, David Eigenberg, Ron Livingston, Willie Garson, Sean Palmer, Nathan Lane, Julie Halston.

Do You Swear By The 'F' Word?

March 10th 2008 18:33
I am a fan of the ‘F’ word. I’ll use it as a verb, a noun, or even as an adjective. It’s such a useful word, so simple yet so versatile, often even cathartic. Surprise, pain, sorrow, joy, anger – so many emotions can be expressed in that one utterance.

The promotion of Sex and the City: The Movie has begun. We know this because the four stars have begun gushing about each other and the film and how much they love everything, darling, to every facet of the mega-media. See below snippets of interviews from Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristen Davis and Cynthia Nixon.

Four: French Kissing In NYC

March 4th 2008 18:33
In Season Four, things start getting serious in the lives of the girls, with pregnancy, divorce and marriage on the agenda. Yet this season is probably the most fun, with plenty of quirky happenings and hilarious high jinks, and as ever, the celebrated potluck of sexcapades.
