Jolie's Casting Spell: Role of Maleficent in Burton Remake of 'Sleeping Beauty'?
April 20th 2010 08:55
It appears Tim Burton may be taking up his magic wand once more to direct a remake of another children’s classic – Sleeping Beauty. Entitled Maleficent, the remake will purportedly focus on the evil fairy’s turbulent past, which led her to curse a certain princess to a century of snoozing.
Delightful as Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are, the world could no doubt handle a Burton film without their presence, so rumours that Angelina Jolie will take up the role of Maleficent are pleasing. With her dark, edgy beauty and capacity for wildness, she would surely do well as the captivatingly wicked fairy – though I can’t see Jolie transforming into a dragon any time soon.

I hope Burton makes this version of Sleeping Beauty more for adults than children. I'm hanging for him to make a fully-fledged horror movie for adults, but the lure of making PG-13 movies (read: commercial success) seems to influence him too much.

She is my favourite Disney villain too - was obsessed as a child. I really love her name, and I think even if only because she is the title character, the film should be for adults, with her name invoking thoughts of violence and malevolent ferocity.
The plot sounds like it will be in the style of Wicked so we'll have to see if Maleficent is lightened up in the same way the Wicked stage show was from the book.
Thanks!

This could be a good idea, but I have yet to see Jolie turn in a worthwhile performance onscreen.

Long time no type! hehe.
That bitch witch scared the three cornered britches offa me as a little chasp!
I had nightmares after seeing her.
Anyway, I completely agree with you, Jolie is an inspired choice, and reading Bryn's comments makes me worried it'll end up more sappy than the original, let's hope not!
cheers

We'll see if Jolie can live up to Maleficent. It seems the test will be whether you are in possession of your britches after seeing this flick, so please do report back once you watch it.
