They Should At Least Pretend To Act

September 12th 2007 20:33
I’ll be qualifying the above statement in regard to a few of the ‘actors’ in the list below, but most of them, I do believe, are just utterly appalling. Abysmal to the point where they could be eligible for a job on either Neighbours, or Passions.

David Caruso
The man is a fool. All those profound statements in a lilting voice, hands on hips, head to the side, shades of sophistication… What a loser.

Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger
Two big brawny men who can’t talk properly, let alone act properly – but they have their moments all the same.

Katie Holmes
Not memorable at all. The only time she did alright was in The Gift – and that’s when she was playing a dead ’un.

Daniel Radcliffe
Stilted and gaspy as Harry Potter. HOWEVER, I very much like the lad and suspect he may be better in December Boys.

Chuck Norris
Just ridiculous. Plus, his name is ‘Chuck’.

Steven Seagal
Most unconvincing action hero ever. Sly, Arnie and JCVD aren’t convincing either, but at least they got a bit of charisma.

Jim Carrey
Should stick to being annoying in comedies, and avoid being unwatchable in any kind of serious role or scene.

Russell Crowe
Should stick to being supercilious in dramas, and avoid being unwatchable in any kind of comedic role or scene.

Brooke Shields
Has a whole swag of forgettable movie and TV roles, where she tries and fails to be funny or competent. Suddenly Susan, Blue Lagoon, her eyebrows and her tiff with Tom Cruise are the only things anyone remembers.

Heather Graham
Surely acting is just her hobby? She just seems to flit about doing a guest spot here and there. I’ve never seen her give a remarkable performance.

What are your thoughts? Mine are that there are so many bad actors, I’m going to have to make this a two-parter.

"Gentlemen (lengthy, sophisticated lilting pause - hands on hips [a little bit of melodrama for the critics]) ... We have a complaint!"

I totally agree - there are way TOO many bad actors out there to make it a coincidence! I wonder what they had to do to score their big breaks

David,

They will require more blood-detecting spray.

JoH,

I hate to think what avenue Chuck Norris took to make it to the big time!

Good to see you,

Michaelie, agree with absolutely everyone you picked. I HATE David Caruso. I think the reason why he wears sunnies all the time is because the director got sick of telling him to look more alive! Stallone, Arnold, Chuck, Seagal - ditto. Well, what do you expect from action heroes, really? I'm a little uncertain about Radcliffe - he made a good HP but there were times when I thought he was a little wooden. Love Russell Crowe but he totally tanked in whatever that movie was - A Good year??? Ditto about Jim Carrey - loved him as a comic actor. With Shields, I didn't realise how bad an actor she was until I watched her guesting on That 70s show. And Heather Graham. Who's she?

The only good scene David Caruso ever did didn't require speaking--the getting-out-of-the-jet-underw ater scene in Office and an Gentleman where he nearly drowned!

Aimzster,

Exactly. So glad we agree. Lol. Russell is really very good in dramatic roles, particularly A Beautiful Mind, but when he tries to be funny... Lord. I felt embarrassed for him in A Good Year.

Thanks for the visit! Always a pleasure.

James,

If only he hadn't been so lucky. Maybe he should be a stunt man? Something that doesn't require speaking and that makes him take up a different stance anyway. My, but it's painful to watch him act!

Thanks for the comment!

I'd put up Anakin from the new Star Wars movies. I didn't like that one bit.

Cibbuano,

Is that Hayden Christensen? I haven't seen anything Star Wars but I remember something about him... and he is a terrible actor.

I agree with almost all of your list. However, I quite liked Jim Carrey's performance in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, although usually I'm not fussed.

This is going to be unpopular, but I don't know why everyone goes on about how wonderful Peter O'Toole is. I just don't think he can act. Some might say its because he's a Shakespearean actor, but while I like others of the same era and background as him (Derek Jacobi, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen) I just don't like him.

Julia Roberts tends to be pretty bad. I try to avoid any movie with her in it.

There are bound to be others, but they are escaping me at the moment.

Michaelie,
I knew I liked you.
I knew it the first time I sat in the tree outside your house.
Sorry, diverted.
David Caruso is one of the finest carrot actors of his generation.
I wouldn't piss on him if he was a redhead.

Nice list Michaelie.

I used to love Steven Segal movies....but I am a lover of BAD movies. I think it's cos he didn't even try to act. But there came a point where I think he thought he could act, and his movies didn't even have that tongue in cheek "look how bad this dude is" element to them. Then I had to say goodbye to Steven.

You're right that JCVD had charisma. I remember reading an interview with him. And he was asked what was the hardest thing about doing movies now that he was popular. He laughed and said acting. He mentioned how the director on his current film had told him "Jean Claude you look good in a tux, but you can't act for shit". How can you not like that?

Hi Nina,

I think Peter O'Toole can act, but when you put him up next to the others you mentioned, particularly Ian McKellen, he doesn't seem to have as much appeal. He was very good at being evil in the Duguay version of Joan of Arc though.

There are definitely others, which is why I had to make this a two-parter. Imagine if there were this many bad doctors or something. We'd probably all be dead.

Thanks for the comment, Nina!

I know what you mean, Kylie. You can put up with people's shit sometimes as long as they don't have pretensions about it. Seagal's got them, JCVD doesn't. They are both hopeless actors but that's why one is on my list and the other isn't.

Thanks for dropping in!

oh the list is soooo long..

Keanu Reeves is def up there with the worst ever, and i think ill get SHOT for this but Brad Pitt plays the same guy over and over...and have you noticed he always eats in his scenes, its like his trade mark, I am so cool look...dont get me wrong i still think he is a nice guy but there is a reason Matt Damon has a star on hollywood Boulevard and Brad doesnt!!!!!!

and I agree with annakin from Star Wars that was a shabby performance....

cheers

Louie,

I have noticed Brad Pitt always eating AND talking with his mouth full. He does it a lot in the Oceans movies. I don't think much of him in any way. Matt Damon is WAY better!

Thanks Louie!

Michaelie,

If Big and Carrie have a baby - will it be little or big, will it be a little bit like Big or a big bit like Big? Will the baby belittle big or make Big bigheaded? Will Carrie carry little or big Big okay? Or dare I say it - will Carrie miscarry little or big Big before the day?

Luv your post!
