'Big' News: Will He Die Or Marry Carrie?
September 11th 2007 00:47
Sex and the City rumours are afloat and swirling in a whirlpool of vigorous speculation. Recent buzz has suggested that Chris Noth’s reprisal of his Big role will be a brief one, with the death of the legendary character occurring in the upcoming movie, while other reports contend that the much-anticipated film will culminate in Mr Big’s marriage to Carrie.
I, for one, hope both these rumours prove groundless. It took six seasons for Carrie to work out how she felt about Big and where she stood with him – it will take more than one film for her to deal with his death. Furthermore, he is essential to Sex and the City. He was there from the very first episode, with his silk ties, cigars and captivating suavity – he “abso-f***ing-lutely” better not cark it now.
As to Carrie and Big finishing the film with a fairytale wedding… that’s too easy. ‘They got married, had babies and lived happily ever after. THE END’. Michael Patrick King can do a lot better than that. Hopefully he will stay true to the characters that were created with such multi-faceted perfection and not get all mushy and give the unimaginative masses what they think they want. Sex and the City has always been relevant and unafraid to push the boundaries – not to mention highly engaging and hilarious.
I can’t think of the perfect ending for the SATC movie and I would be very disappointed if it was something I could conjure up so easily myself. So you do the thinking for me and report back post haste!

- Sam and her young stud decide to spawn kids.
- Charlotte and Harry move to the country.
- Miranda quits her job.
- Carrie's shoes finally catch up with her and she realises she's broke. Then Big asks her to move to Paris.

HAHAHAHAHA! I'm glad someone else can ramble on about SATC like a crazy person! Also, like me, you have managed to get way ahead of yourself. I was nearly weeping for the grief of "poor Mr broken heart Big" just from following your thought process!
Glad you stopped by,

Manolo Blahnik must have made a mint off Carrie Bradshaw! And don't forget her fear of being "the old woman who lived in her shoes". Lol.
It would be very interesting indeed if Sam procreated. Can you imagine...!
Thanks for the comment, Tash.

Love the post Michaelie, but I believe it took Big 6 seasons to realise how he truly felt, not the other way around. Just my opinion anyways.
I couldn't agree more with you on this.....
I hope it's something appropriately unresolved personally....a 'life goes on' philosophy.....
Great post! Keep up the SATC obsession!
Cheers

PS. I was laughing at the "small Big" role. He he.

You are spot-on with Big. And I think I'll be the one having a coronary if they get married!
I LOVED Aidan! But I think he's more suited to his arm-chair (making) wife and Carrie to Big. V interesting if she had a little baby Big though... Lol.

I KNOW. When I heard it, I felt actual grief. Am perhaps slightly too involved in SATC... Lol.
You are correct of course. Big was the one who didn't know how he felt, and Carrie just obsessed over that. "Please, you're Miss Obsess... you have a relationship rear-view mirror... 'relationships may appear closer than they really are' " LOL.
I hope it ends that way too (open), like in the last episode of season six. It's more realistic, and for me, more satisfying.
Fear not, I will keep up my SATC mania. "More news as it happens!"

It would suck if they have them get married. It would be like the whole "Friends" finale, when Rachel and Ross ended up together. I thought that was dumb - they tied everything up too well. "Everyone got married and lived happily ever" after does not make a good story.
So, I hope they don't get married. I'd prefer he died, actually, but only if I had to pick one or the other.
It would be good story if they got married in the beginning, and then he cheated on her (I know, I'm awful, but it's a good story!) - bringing her her karma for having the "Aidan affair" and sleeping with Big while he was married. The rest of the movie could be spent with Carrie driving herself crazy with her analytical theories about their relationship, alternating with her guilt and anger with Big, and trying to figure out what she should do...
I think Charlotte should unexpectantly get pregnant, because that happens in real life all the time - adopt a baby and you get pregnant.
Steve should die of testicular cancer, leaving Miranda to balance work and single motherhood.
Samantha should get married.
God, this is too long, and I put way too much thought into this. Sorry...I think I just pulled a "Carrie."

I loved it, and yes you did. Lol.
Of course, I totally agree. I think they got indulgent enough with the finale to the series, I would hate it if they were even worse with the movie. It will annoy me beyond belief.
Much as I love Big, if I had to choose, I would kill him off too. Does that make us evil? We would rather a great character die than be happy just so we aren't bored? If so, I embrace it.
SJP has said there are no funerals, but two weddings in the movie. I hope the rumours that Carrie's wedding is a dream are true!
Thanks!

No, it makes us writers! It's all about the story, baby.
I don't like dream sequences - they're usually a cop -out. Sopranos did that to death with Tony, and it got annoying.
Here's an alternative to Big - Maybe once Carrie finally gets him, she won't want him - I can see that happening. She may start to wonder if she ever really liked him, or if it was just the thrill of the chase and wanting what she couldn't have... You know she will agonize over something. She better, or it just wouldn't be Carrie and it would suck.

I do want Carrie and Big to be together I think, just no oversentimentality! It has to be sharper than ever or it will be a disappointment. And you're right - Carrie without emotional turmoil is no Carrie at all. I hope they know what they are doing!

Exactly my feelings.
PS- There's a video right under your article. When I saw it, I thought, "Is that Big? I looked closer and it's a cadillac ad...I thought you had posted some more of the trailer and I was excited....I'm such a dork!
