Blow-Out Budget Trash
September 4th 2007 19:56
The movies below promised a lot, but in the end, they just couldn’t get it up.
Sahara
Despite Matthew McConaughey’s best efforts to promote this movie himself, it was a giant flop. With expenses nearing the $300 million mark, a lacklustre presentation, and a script that ignored logic and historical fact, it’s no wonder it didn’t create the intended franchise, let alone turn a profit.
M:I-2
Yes, it made its huge budget back about five times over, but it surely did so because of the flow-on success of Mission: Impossible. It could not have achieved such a thing on its own merit, being by far the worst of the three. It is the most predictable, the least funny, has several mistakes and was poorly put together after many scenes were cut.
Gigli
Maybe this did so poorly because people went to the cinema asking for a ticket to ‘Giggly’? Or maybe it was just because it was total crap. Starring Hollywood bores Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, the movie made $47 million less than its budget and won six Razzies.
Armageddon
A success at the box office, but I did not enjoy. I love Bruce but this was one of his absolute worst movies. It garnered a very mixed reception, with both Razzie and Academy Award nominations. The film had a lot of inaccuracies, with no compensation.
Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle
Trash of the lowest variety. It more than doubled its budget in profits, but really, one was bad enough.
Titanic
I was enraptured by this movie the first time I saw it. I sobbed in the cinema, loudly and embarrassingly, when it ended. I maintained my adoration through repeated sittings thereafter, even though it lost a little bit of its magic with each one. I still like it, could very easily sit through it, but I love it no longer. It overwhelmed me with its grandeur at first – as it did many – but it’s not the ‘king of the world’ in my eyes today. I feel like its $200 million budget would have been better spent elsewhere, perhaps. That said, I still find the scene in steerage, with the beat of the Irish drums, incredibly moving.
The Invasion
This sci-fi film starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig has swallowed a $65 million budget and given Kidman a concussion and broken ribs. It may well be that it is cursed, as it has flopped in the US and already been pulled from Australian screens, despite reshooting and title changes. Why is it that whenever Nicole is married, her career goes downhill? Maybe the best career advice she could get right now is… get divorced. It worked last time, after all.

I definitely have to agree that M:I-2 was shocking. In desperation I hired M3 though, and I really loved it. Hard to believe they could be so different yet in the same series of movies.
I know it's very 'uncool' to admit to liking the film Titanic, but I did. That said, I'm never watching it again in case I change my mind.
Loved the post!

You've named some good ones, especially Armageddon. What a load of tripe that was...and I accidently saw it twice when we were in Greece (long story, they have intermissions there and I went into the wrong cinema).
I'm going to try and think of some more crappy films to add to the list

I'm glad we can be united in our hatred once at least, lol. Great suggestion with Pearl Harbour. I'm pretty sure it cost over $100 million to make, but made no great impression on me.
I've heard Battlefield Earth was ludicrously bad, but I haven't actually seen it. That's probably why! I saw weird hairy people and decided it wasn't for me.

It is unbelievable how bad M:I-2 was in comparison to the others. I gave it one last chance with the third one also and was much relieved.
If you want to keep loving Titanic then you are right - don't watch it repeatedly! Retain your fond memories and let it keep its initial magic.
That would be very 'cool' indeed.

Poor you! Armageddon twice. Now that's what I call a Greek tragedy! LOL.
As to adding to the list - please do!
