Fascinating Film Femmes
February 17th 2010 07:00
In life, there is a notable distinction between beautiful and sensuous, agreeable and challenging, engaging and captivating. But when an actor is blessed with a sensuous, challenging and captivating spirit, the effect is magnified, as it imbues the characters they portray.
Some actors are merely on film, others have true screen presence. They have that je ne sais quoi, an evocative magnetism that is at once so difficult to grasp and yet impossible to deny.
Consider these ladies of the silver screen:
Would Holly Go Lightly have the same bizarre charisma if played by Anne Hathaway? Would Ruth Wilson’s Jane Eyre have soul if Sandra Bullock took the role? Could Bai Ling play with fire like Tang Wei? Would Mogambo be still appeal with Jennifer Aniston in the jungle instead of Grace Kelly? The may have some superficial similarities, but they can’t all enthral their audience.
Actress versus enchantress – who charms you?

They all charm me, of course, except Audrey Hepburn who should never - and I offer this as a gentle admonishment from someone much older than you - be compared to mere human beings.
I love your choice of pictures, with my top three (purely subjective, and not counting the Goddess Audrey) going to: Helen Mirren, Tang Wei, Kristin Scott Thomas and Sigrid Thornton.
What do you mean, that's four?

I'll take that on board
I like the pictures too - was trying to get them all in a similar sort of pose, and capture something of their character. Was trying to get pictures from movie scenes but couldn't get good ones for all of them that didn't have other people in them, etc.
I think Sigrid and Marion Cotillard kind of look alike in those pics, they have that mesmeric brooding happening.
Thanks for the comment!

i cant go past Chloe Sevigny, something about her androgyny
i also think Rachael McAdams is consistently captivating, and something of a chameleon
oh and Emily Blunt is catching my attention lately, stunning woman

Emily Blunt - nice one. There is definitely something about her.
Agree with the chameleon part about Rachel McAdams, don't know if I think she's a captivating chameleon.
I find Sevigny interesting but must say I haven't seen much of her, she's only had bit parts in the stuff I have seen. Didn't really like her in Shattered Glass.
Thanks for visiting as always and for sharing your thoughts!
