Fresh 'Eyre' for Fassbender

October 31st 2010 03:33
Excitement abounds. The latest adaptation of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre is slated for release in just over four months, starring none other than Michael Fassbender as the moody, brooding (can we hope for denuded?) Mr Rochester. Brava, brava! This promises to be a supreme choice of casting, along with Dame Judi Dench as Mrs Fairfax – but what of the leading lady?

The role of Jane will be donned by Mia Wasikowksa, the Aussie girl of Alice fame, and I’m not so sure it fits. While feeling that she let the team down, acting-wise, in the Tim Burton flick, at least it was alright for her to be pretty in Wonderland. Can she really even pull off looking poor and plain, let alone wallow in the depths of such a classic character as Jane Eyre? I fear she will fall well short of Ruth Wilson’s portrayal in the BBC serial, but hope she will prove better than expected, both in this and in Gus Van Sant’s Restless.

Jane Eyre is directed by Cary Fukunaga, with screenplay by Moira Buffini, and will have a strong focus on the gothic themes of the novel. Hopefully it will explore the darkness and danger and mystery and passion alluded to by Bronte, i.e. with any luck it’s not too G-rated.

Hey Michaelia, this sort of thing has never been my cup of tea, but I do loooooove Fassbender - each film I've seen him in, he's become closer and closer to becoming my new favourite actor, so maybe I will land up seeing this.

It's the name on everyone's lips at the moment! Even if you're not much of a fan of Charlotte Bronte's novels I think this will be worth seeing for a) Fassbender and b) to see how it will turn out under Cary Fukunaga's direction. Most of these kinds of adaptations seem to be miniseries or BBC telemovie versions, so this will give a different style - especially with two hot new names.
