Birthday Girl of Flick Wit: Celebrating YOU

August 23rd 2008 04:24
This post marks one year to the minute since Flick Wit nudged its way into the virtual Orb, with what was effectively an apology for the hiccups that were surely to come. Luckily, there were plenty of people around willing to slap me on the back, coerce me into drinking water backwards, and sometimes, jump out from darkened corners and scare the bejesus out of me. So the hiccups were kept (for the most part) at bay, and I could get on with the business of shamelessly self-indulgent writing.

My birthday present - No, Trace, you may not have a piece. Image courtesy of publishersweekly.com

Now, this practice sounds like the bee’s knees, and really, I enjoy it immensely, but without the subsequent interaction of the Orble community – the discussion, the debates, the hell-raising and the hilarity, I’m afraid it just wouldn’t be nearly as fun.

Therefore, despite the fact that it’s my birthday, and I legitimately deserve to be the centre of attention, I am instead throwing the spotlight on those who really take the cake, and celebrating a selection of my favourite comments left on Flick Wit over the last twelve months (automatic high ranking to those who boost ego and/or make the site a nice/interesting/mirthful place to visit):

‘Sex and the City’ Movie Leak – SJP to be NAKED?

Tracy:
Oh my gosh, you really had me going there!!! I'm not usually a fan of telly series being turned films, but I would definitely see this one if it happened!!

You should email your ideas to a director, Michaelie...you never know

Great post.

Why Baz Is The Best

JohnDoe:
Hi Michaelie,
A well written post,

But I must be a voice of dissent and admit I hate everything Baz has done and doubt I8 will ever watch his work again..

Found Strictly Ballroom just sappy and dull with terrible acting

Romeo and Juliet was a good idea but the execution removed any emotion from the piece.

Moulin Rouge was tragic casting lead actors in a musical who cant carry a tune and then viciously sodomizing classic tunes with cover versions that hurt the ears.

As for the film Australia it has Nicole Kidman in it and He's directing so I doubt it.

Basically i don't like Baz's fairy floss substance blended with over staged, artificial visuals.
To end with something nice, occasionally the cinematography of his films is interesting.

Hope we can still be friends.

Top Twenty Beaut Aussie Movies

Lilla:
Hi Michaelie,

A few of my favs. to add to the long list of brilliance that (for me) was shining (and shines brighter) than much of Hollywood - for me - back then : Man from Snowy River duo. More recently, I though Heath Ledger made an excellent Kelly and Geoffrey was superb.

Paperback Hero
The Interview (with Hugo)
The Dish
The Dismissal (TV Movie)
Crackerjack ((HIllarious riot)
The Castle (Absolute ripper)...
Malcolm
They're a weird Mob
Strange BedFellows (Long before the US stole it for Chuck and Larry)
10 Canoes
Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith
The Foreigner??? (With Tony Collete and some Japanese Tourist guy who dies...)
Razerback
The Wog Boy
The Oyster Farm (was it? Filmed on the Hawkesbury - someone stole money) ..sorry poor memory for names,
Which one had Judy Davis as Newspaper Reporter who exposed corruption - going back a fair ways for that on to the early 80's.

...anyeeeway, there are many more in the lists above that I hav really enjoyed, and as for Aussssie Deirector Peter Weir - I just love any of his work... there really are so many good films of every genre and I have to agree with you on them being Bonza... I celebrate this post salute with you.

Caio

Superb On Screen, Lacking Character In Life

DuskDevi:
Oh God you're funny!

I have always felt that to be a good actor...you can't have much of a personality in the first place.

I mean...in order to become someone else...completely and absolutely...you must be able to shed yourself, all mannerisms, way of speech, etc...the proverbial empty canvas.

Too often we think that the actor is this clever, witty, strong, fantastic person...when really, it's the writer's alter ego speaking!

Having said that...there are many actors who are able to 'separate'...which means they have an element of multiple personalities!
It's best, I think, to not forget that actors are the total of their...parts!

...and having said all that...Sean Connery rocks! I think Brad Pitt would be fun to hang with. I like Catherine Zeta-Jones' attitude. Sharon Stone is a riot! Jennifer Garner would be totally down to earth. Kate Winslett seems so so lovely and warm and witty. Will Smith...although cocky, would be cool. Then there's people like Matt Damon, Natalie Portman, Jodie Foster who all seem so...humble and as you say, not above themselves.

You're excellent to read Michaelie. I'm a fan!

‘Big’ News: Will He Die Or Marry Carrie?

Pamela:
If Big and Carrie have a baby - will it be little or big, will it be a little bit like Big or a big bit like Big? Will the baby belittle big or make Big bigheaded? Will Carrie carry little or big Big okay? Or dare I say it - will Carrie miscarry little or big Big before the day?

Luv your post!

Lara M:
No, no, no...Big can't die -- they made us endure the all that going back-and-forth all those seasons, it can't be that easy. ...and I actually don't want to see them married -- like so many have said, a bit too cliche. How about Carrie have an affair with Aidan...AND...gets pregnant!

They Should At Least Pretend To Act

Norm:
Michaelie,
I knew I liked you.
I knew it the first time I sat in the tree outside your house.
Sorry, diverted.
David Caruso is one of the finest carrot actors of his generation.
I wouldn't piss on him if he was a redhead.

They Should At Least Pretend To Act, Too

Aimzster:
Grrrr..don't get me started about Buffy. I hate Buffy with a vengeance - might have to do with getting locked out of the house, throwing stones at my window trying to get hubby's attention which was caught up by Buffy's breasts. But anyway, I digress...what about Keanu Reeves? Wooden!!
PS. Agree with everything on your list. But by far, Mariah Carey is the worst actress among them. I mean, she's bad acting in her video clips, let alone a whole movie.

Tarantino – Incredible But Creepy

Jickle:
My basic view on Tarantino is that he is capable of brilliance (Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction are both solidly entrenched in my Top 10), but is also in serious danger of collapsing under the weight of his own ego. He's made some ridiculous statements in the past (especially that one about how if he "wanted his movies full of computer-generated shit he'd stick his dick in a Nintendo"), and more and more his movies are becoming in-jokes for himself. Kill Bill Vol. 1 is a fun film, but it's probably fair to assume that most of the people who saw it aren't familiar with the movies it is a homage to, or the fact that they do a lot of the things Tarantino was doing a lot better (the big fight scene has nothing on a lot of Chinese martial arts films). Deathproof, I'm hoping to see on release day, but the whole idea of Grindhouse seemed a bit off center to me. The 'missing reel' idea isn't exactly something that was actually synonymous with grindhouses, and really showing two standard-budget films back to back, made specifically to be marketed as B Movies rather than actually being B Movies, seemed to miss the point, marketing wise, to me.

I think, perhaps, Grindhouse flopping will show Tarantino he's not as 'safe' as he thought he was, and he'll reel back a bit from his current ego-driven productions and infamous 'Quentin Tarantino Presents' label. At least, I hope so, because I'd love another Tarantino classic.

I Liked Leo Best When He Dribbled

Louie:
Leo's best film is his current Environment Doco....he may be jumping on the bandwagon but creating a doco is a pretty convincing jump...mind you Al Gore has made a fortune and pretty mch a career off of it

cool post

Before He Joined The Mile-High Club, Fiennes Fornicated In The Desert

KylieW:
I think I must be one of the only chicks in the world who has never seen The English Patient (and has absolutely no desire to ever watch it).

He's not a bad looking fellow though is the old Ralph Fiennes.

And I for one, loved the first paragraph!! You're spot on with that flight attendent. And you're right, she would have slept with him no matter what she thought of him so that she could sell her story!

Aimster:
Michaelie, I am of the same opinion Elaine from Seinfeld was in that episode where she was forced to watch The English Patient with her boss. I fidgeted and gritted my teeth all the way through. I'm sorry, English Patient just isn't for me, but I did like him in The Schindler's List if that counts for something??

Fifty Film Frustrations

Mountain Fog:
Hi Michaelie,

tee hee! Yes, a blob of blood is what is needed!

Actually, my theory is about a 'social equation' if you like, that is, bloodless violent films subtly 'train' young minds to accept violence and vigilantism as a proper response, hence the support for the Iraq war went with little or no protest, UNTIL, images started seeping out showing the bloodshed. So, I say, if all films showed violence as it ACTUALLY is, instead of the sanitised versions that pour out of Hollywood, society would be all the more healthier for it.

(Damn...just blew my wad so to speak...my post....oh well...maybe I can reconfigure it, then again, it will get more exposure here than on my own site!! hehe!!)

cheers and here's to the cinematic blood bank pouring open its doors!!!!

A Brooding Captain and a Goat That Sings – These Are a Few of My Favourite Things

James:
The last time I watched this flick was about a year ago. I was trying a different perspective and decided that if you took out all the songs, that would be one exciting little flick. I'm surprised nobody has tried that!

Kids These Days

Ash:
Hi michaelie

I have thought the same thing myself q few times. They seem to have 'achieved' more than most of us in their short lives - but with one huge price to pay for it all.

I suppose successs is in the eyes of the beholder though. A girl my sister went to school with is now splached across the tabloids every now and again. Recently on a stint in the French Riviera my mother said, 'Just look at her. That could have been one of your girls you know.'
"But mom I have been to the French Riviera too, don`t you remember the photos?' I replied
to which she said

"yes dear but you weren`t in a million dollar boat!'

To Be Like Grace Kelly

Cibbuano:
How did her parents know that she'd be so graceful?

RE: Sexiest Movie Moments

katyzzz:
Good to have someone here who definitely knows what sexy is, other than a car, of course, well done Michaelie, your list has done you proud. Gold star.

Bryn:
Cool Hand Luke, yeah, great scene.
Ursula Andress in the surf, yeah.
Jessica Rabbit, ummmm, yeah?
But otherwise what a lame list!!!
I could think of a dozen foreign movies with more sex appeal in their title credit sequences than this softcock selection, pardon my French.
Sex and Lucia ... now that had some hot stuff!
Wong Kar-Wai's Fallen Angels ...
But it seems the list is fairly Hollywood-centric. So what about the fridge food scene in 9-and-a-half-weeks? The movie was pretty terrible, but that scene was memorable.
... btw .. I love making lists too!

Great Flicks For Small Folk

JoH:
Michaelie
I think you have covered every possible base! You're far too thorough, thats your problem
I can't go past a bit of Mary Poppins, and a smattering of Charlie's Chocolate Factory (but only the first 45 mins). Once Augustus Gloop falls into the chocolate river I lose interest.....probably cos I was alway miffed that it wasn't me!

Great post!

Posh To Be Sexy Spice

Tracy:
Yes, she was lovely before....now she is just a stick who doesn't smile much but just ponces around everywhere....

Very Merry Movies

Mr Nice Guy:
Hey Michaelie

I used to love the whole "Don't you know its Christmas Charlie Brown?" movies that suddenly appeared Xmas eve.

You never saw Santa go about his business (then again who does?) but mysteriously the whole gang wound up with smiles on their little celluoid faces come Christmas morn.

My vote for the cheesiest Santa/Xmas movie has to go to Santa Clause conquers the Martians from the mid 60's I think.

I've seen this probably 4 or 5 times - and the special effects, costumes and actors are superb

Ho ho ho . . .

'Sex’ Spoilers… And Sequels?

DuskDevi:
....oh I've missed your slick wit Michaelie!

I'm all for endless, ongoing and multiple Sex...not sure about the movies. ba-boom tish

...the producers are just taking advantage of sad SATCs' who insist on watching and rewatching episodes on Foxtel even if they do have the SATC collection and no, I don't know anyone like that...why? who's asking?

Seriously now...this will be a case of good Sex gone bad if the sequels happen.

What they should do is WebTV...an offical SATC Carrie blog...her column with video snippets of what she's writing about...something like that...

Aneewayy...I do hope you are well gorgeous. Apologies for having missed so many posts...I'm not really 'back' either...saw your New Post notification and thought I'd say hello...

Bye for now

‘Jane Eyre’ Gets Some Flair

Annie:
Hi Michaelie,

I love love love your post and I guess it goes without saying that I also love this adaption of Jane Eyre.

It is no easy task bringing to life this beloved piece of literature and doing it justice at the same time. The casting was brilliant, especially of the famous Ms. Eyre, who was captivating from beginning to end. I couldn't help but stare at her face which is stunning despite no being conventionally beautiful.

Thank you for the Mr. Rochester eye-candy . It was very much appreciated and has been put to good use as my desktop background.

Only In The Movies!

Mr Nice Guy:
Mich

Great post girl. Had me snorting with laughter for a moment there - had forgotten about some of those outrageous 'do's'.

Mr Spock had a interesting look about him in the Star Trek Series while there really wasn't too much you could do with Chewbacca's locks was there.

Mr T had a great do in Rocky III while Yahoo Serious looked great in Young Einstein.

Dr Emmett Brown from Back to the Future had a nice cut and blow wave going on the sides while Uma Thurman look cool with the whole slick thing in Pulp Fiction too.

Audrey Hepburn also needs to be added to the list with some nice beehives (ala Marge Simpson)

Love your work.

Irresistible, From Any Direction

Pat:
He certainly is very handsome.

Do You Swear By The ‘F’ Word

Sara Dobson:
I use the F word all the time. I can't help myself. I am actually trying to quit because I don't want my kids to pick it up. I gave up smoking 2 years ago and I think giving up the F word may be harder

Geoff Egan:
I love the F word. And I know I shouldn't, but its just so effective. I'm not a moron either, I have a pretty wide vocabulary, but swearing just makes a sentence so much more forceful.

If I said "Your pressence causes me immense displeasure" using more eloquant words, just doesn't sound the same as "I f'ing hate you".

But personally I think I can go over the top. When you start swearing with no reason, and putting the f word in the middle of other words, I think there may be an issue. But hey, I'm blaming it on my Irish heritage

Aimzster:
Mich, I love this piece. You sound just like Carrie Bradshaw! No, I don't think the F word has lost its impact, despite the number of times you hear it on TV (tune into Hell's Kitchen & you'll find yourself saying F me) at work the next day. These days though, to make a greater impact, I add the M word in front. And, to be even more scandalous, I use the combination of MFC - gets me in trouble all the time.

Kleonaptra:
Ah Mich, what a great post!
Im chronic. Its fuckin everything down to fan fucking tastic. I can do incredibly well, but like everyone has said....It creeps back. Like Fog I can generally make it humouros rather than offensive. I say it so much Ive got my MUM saying it!

My birds first words will probably be - "Fucking stop it!"

As for its origin? I heard it came from the times when the KIng had complete control over every man and his possesions, including his wife. So if a man said 'fuck' or 'im fucked' it was a particularly dirty word, as it meant his wife was...
Fornicating Under Command of the King.
Makes sense to me!

The Stunt Butt

TL Corbin:
How about a new post topic: The worst Job Title?

When I worked in the mining industry, I would not tell anyone that my job title was: Mucker (a level designation would have driven me to mayhem), so for me, a title of Stunt Butt Double would have been upscale, Michaelie.

Raven . . . will keep his thong to himself thank you.

Joanne Fedler:
That first butt is a work of bloody art. Is it for real? It's like a sculpture... gorgeous.
Personally I prefer to see the actor's real bits on screen.
And Raven, what do you have against that sweet bottom in the g-string. I think it's kinda cute, and I'm not being cheeky.

Miswanderlust:
This
Stunt butt school
"cracks " me up!

‘Little Britain’ Film A Big Rumour?

Louie:
computer says nooooooooooo

i reckon it would be a hit for sure, maybe they can get Lindsay Lohan to do full frontal to guarantee its success!!!!

Multiple Personalities: A Film Tutorial

David O'Connell:
I love The Talented Mr. Ripley, easily my favourite of Anthony Minghella's films.

I recently watched Shattered Glass again about journalist Stephen Glass and his mostly fabricated work as a writer for The New Rupublic. It was fascinating to see the lengths he went to in trying to maintain the illusion of his work's authenticity even as his world and credibility began to crumble around him. His level of determined denial was shocking.

Tracy:
"Possibly even Reebok Pumps, which I hear are making a comeback?" Oh no... eekk!!

Multiple personalities...what a subject. Well I never...

This is good advice especially Lesson Five: Don’t Push It – The Nutty Professor.

True words indeed.

Movie Mamas

Joseph R Terrazzino:
Ha. Funny. I choose . . . psycho, harlot, strange . . . no offense, Mommy. I just love movies from each category! I'll watch Carrie, American Pie, and Meet the Fockers.

In America, the TV blares "Go Outback tonight!" LOL.

Good restaurant, but I wonder if Australia has a similar place: maybe . . .

American Squalor (questionably edible fast food) or

Overbearing Bush Brunch (texas barbecue and gun belts full of tater tots) or

Those Fucking Americans (multinational stolen cuisine from various countries)?

Morgan Bell:
oh i know the stealing of the shoes is so devastating . . . her feet are so cracked and red and swollen and sore and the new shoes look like cheap white fluffy marshmallows, i cant believe she gets in trouble for that, she DESERVED those shoes!

Sex and the City: Full Frontal Movie Review

Mrs M:
Okay ladies....here goes.

For the first time "Big and Carrie" seemed to ring untrue to me. I'm not quite sure how it fell apart and she took him back way to easily for the fuss she maintained for 6 months.

And Steve admitting adultery seemed to come out of left field. There was no real story development leading up to it.

The wit wasn't consistent but I put that down to format. 22mins of television vs 2 1/2 of movie is a big difference.

I wasn't disappointed by this movie but I wasn't wowed by it either.

I did go with a friend of mine who had never seen an episode in her life but she loved Samantha.

Anyways....that's SATC according to Mrs M

Love & stuff

Depp, Bale and Wenham – No Enemies of Mine

Morgan Bell:
Depp, Bale, Dorff, and Crudup have to be the most beautiful men in hollywood . . . sounds like a pretty boy party! yay! Public Enemies? hmmm more like Public Beauties! Haha

Cheryl J:
Oh a hunk fest, I'm in!

‘Sex’ No One Night Stand

Norm:
I'm waiting for Sects and the Settee.
Cults do wild things with furniture.

These are but a few of the comments which have entertained, amused, inspired, enlightened or provoked me in the past year, encouraging me no end. You really only have yourselves to blame. Nevertheless, I thank you all, especially those who put the Wit in Flick Wit – it could have proved awkward if I’d had to do it myself.

HAPPY Depp Day, dammit...

Oh, you know what I mean gurrlish!

Love your site and absolutely adore you! And as for Johnny... nahhh... ok yes please!

cheers and congrats

P.S.
May you find Johnny at the foot of your bed one day! But not say, in 50 years time... coz ... weeeell, it would just be some mumbling about how his dentures are rubbing, or trying to find his hearing aids, then the rest of the time would be wasted trying to find his battery operated (extra large) prosthetic 'third leg'... sigh... methinks I just predicted my own self in two years time... but not wantonly, at the foot of your bed lovely, just idolising while prostrated at your feet, basking in your gloriously radiant, beatific self, of course!

Thank ya JD, but I'll pass on the Chartreuse, literally turns me green...

I had plans for this post, was going to copy you copying Bryn, only I thought I would be smarter with the excess linkage by limiting myself to a few comments, so I only had to link selected posts and the home pages of commenters. As you can see, got carried away.

Anyway, CHEERS! You were there for my first post, and here you are 365 days later - thanks a million!

Well, dear Morgan, I simply went to Google and typed in 'Johnny Depp butt', and somehow ended up with this particular picture...

Just kidding, though it would be funny if that had happened, hehe. And yes, he's one hell of a promotion for the tobacco industry!

I love getting comments so much, I thought I should highlight some of the ones that really made me happy - didn't realise what a big job it would end up being!

As to that gold star - I used to get a few from that particular person so long as I didn't stretch her 'tolerance' too much. Then when I 'outed' her she decided to hate me and... no more stars forthcoming. Lol.

Thank you Morgan, and I will endeavour to live up to your assertions! One day.

David,

I positively blush.

One of the nicest comments ever from one of the nicest blokes! Thanks, it really means a lot - especially the use of the verb 'shine', I could have done a lot worse than that. Generally I am of the opinion that my personality 'bumbles'. 'Shine' is a significant upgrade, so merci beaucoup, monsieur.

JCL,

Why, thank you! As is yours, though I think I have only seen the two entries. You must post some more!

Cheers and thanks again!

You gave me two plugs.
I get it now.
I'll keep one, if you decide to pull the other one.

Last night, I dreamt of being a plumber.
Just thought I'd let you know.

Hey Trace,

I don't know. Temporary insanity?

Thank you, it means a lot, and I have reveled in having this oulet of obsession for SATC, indulging with like-minded people such as your good self! It's been fantastic.

Thanks for all the laughs and friendship, love your work.

Likewise, lovely Tracy.

It does indeed Kylie. Before I know it I'll be a blogging matriarch. Or maybe not.

Thanks!

Fog,

Yes, I am blessed, a visit from Dusk... which prompted a second visit from you!

Will do.

Norm,

Such dreams reveal much about the psyche. Ergo, I assume you have already pulled, one or the other. In fact, I hear in the pipeline that you pull the other one with great regularity.
