'Borat' Moves On To 'Bruno'
September 7th 2007 10:55
Sacha Baron Cohen is set to begin production on a new movie starring his third alter-ego, Bruno, an Austrian fashion reporter. First brought to fame through regular appearances on Da Ali G Show, Bruno is a luridly dressed gay man with a mo-hawk and an exaggerated German accent.
Cohen employs the same techniques with Bruno as he does with Borat, setting up his real-life ‘interviewees’ with leading questions to provoke contraversial responses, using psychological ploys to make them agree to incorrect statements out of ignorance or a sense of social conformity, or by convincing his subjects to reverse their position on something they know to be a lie. He does this with outstanding versatility, improvising seamlessly and exposing prejudice and narrow-mindedness with apparent ease. With Bruno, Cohen is perfectly placed to reveal homophobia in society, and targets the American South for this purpose.
Following Bruno, Cohen has confirmed he will be appearing in Dinner For Schmucks a remake of the French hit, Le Diner de Cons where the host challenges his guests to bring to dinner the most pathetic people they can find. Cohen will be playing the most socially defunct character of them all, as we would expect.
I can’t wait for more of Cohen’s distinctive parody, as he cleverly elicits satire from the objects of satire themselves. No doubt another litigious frenzy will erupt, but how can they win when they are so effectively satirising themselves?

I'm really interested in Dinner for Schmucks too! I wonder if he'll be fully scripted or still improvising a fair bit? Time will tell, I guess.
Good to see you,
