Depp, Bale and Wenham - No Enemies of Mine
June 15th 2008 18:03
I don’t know much about this film, due for release in 2009 – but I do know this: Public Enemies is off to a mighty fine start. The cast: Christian Bale, Johnny Depp, Marion Cotillard, David Wenham, Giovanni Ribisi, Channing Tatum, Stephen Dorff, Billy Crudup, John Ortiz and Leelee Sobieski.
Although not the biggest fan of director Michael Mann – could have lived without most of his films, not that they were bad, per se, rather that they tend to generate ambivalence within me, and at times, boredom – am keen to see what he makes of this adaptation, (based on Public Enemies: America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-43 by Bryan Burrough) admittedly, largely due to his leading lads.
The film is set at the time of The Great Depression, and follows the FBI’s pursuit of John Dillinger (Depp) and his gang of nefarious bank robbers. Burrough has said that while the screenplay does not observe complete historical accuracy, he believes it’s about as close as Hollywood has ever tried to get.

That's quite a cast, gosh. I've never heard of this one, but I like the look and sound of it.

Isn't it just. I really like Marion Cotillard and of course, worship Mr Depp.
Love Wenham, but so far only in his Aussie work...
Bound to be something to see, either way...

Screen Fanatic
I've liked a lot of Michael Mann's work - especially his masterpiece Heat, and Collateral which I love to death as well - though he can be hit or miss. He's a very stylish, distinctive filmmaker however, though I'm not sure if I'd have the stamina to work for him - they say he's one of those perfectionists who does dozens of takes for scenes!!

Yes, I think it may be. I don't mind a bit of crime, especially if it involves a smooth criminal like Johhny Depp.
Heat was good, Manhunter and The Insider, not so keen on his work since then, found a lot of it to be overworked and overly drawn-out (maybe his pendantry showing?) but hoping this will have a bit more schebang.
Hope you're well; thanks for dropping by!

This reminds me of two of my favourite filmmaker quotes.
Abbas Kiarostami: "How nice of the director to let you have a little nap during the movie".
Francois Truffaut: "Good films can also be boring- often the best".
They were not being ironic...they both really believed the best films were those you did not necessarily enjoy whilst watching them...but which had you thinking afterwards...
Anything with Johhny Depp in it is a winner.

Ha! Well, I was bored throughout Miami, and my thoughts were not astirring with belated observations afterwards, either!
If only.
However, have strong feeling Johnny Depp will succeed in stirring up... something.

But yeah, Miami, I don't think either Kirostami or Truffaut would dispute you on that one...

HAHAHAHAHA!
Was quite a passionate defense for Mann - did wonder. For the record, I don't think Haneke is ever likely to "generate ambivalence within me, and at times, boredom".

Yes, that's really what it all comes down to. We are realistic people. We can recognise Johnny Depp's inevitable power over us all.

Dorff is alright, not in Johnny's league, but I think he's an ok actor from what I have seen of him, which isn't a whole lot.
Some interesting variables at play with this one, it will be interesting to see how it turns out.
Thanks Kylie!
