'Sex' Could Have Ended Badly

December 13th 2007 18:12
Now that the Sex movie hype has reached fever pitch - thanks to The Trailer, I thought it would be a great time to look back at the series, and see where the movie could have been taking off from had it ended any differently. I wasn’t completely happy with the Sex and the City finale: I wanted Carrie and Big together but I felt the writers indulged in too much sentimentality, deviating from the edgy humour the show had previously been renowned for – but as I have discovered, it could have been a lot worse.

Just as producers have filmed misleading scenes in the movie to keep fans off the scent, they filmed four alternate endings for the series. Here are the three they didn’t use:

Alternate Ending One

Alternate Ending Two

Alternate Ending Three

So do you think they made the right decision? Personally, I like the extension of the café scene Alternate Ending One provides, otherwise… I suppose I’m happy with the way it turned out after all. I just hope they up the ante for the movie.

Hi Michaelie

I agree, I also found the ending of the series a bit cheesy and romanticised. I mean, Mr Big was no angel, he really hurt Carrie so many times, why was he her knight in shining armour (to use a cliché, it seemed appropriate)?

I'm still trying to resist the spoilers so I can't comment on the choice of endings

I have to say, I felt Carrie should've ended-up single and in NYC. I guess I'm not the most romantic person, but I feel that if something ends, it should stay ended - especially after so many tries like Carrie gave Big.

That's alright Raven, it may just be the Y chromosome!

Thanks!

Hi Tracy,

These videos are the alternate endings filmed for the series so they shouldn't give anything away.

Yes - a cliche is appropriate! Lol. I was quite disappointed with it in that way. It almost felt like a parody - I cringe everytime Big comes into the hotel in Paris and says "Hey, why the tears?" It's just not Big. And then the breathing heavily through his nose thing, like a bull, and storming off to 'get' Petrovsky... thank god they got back on track with Carrie tripping Big over... and then later, repeating that very well known phrase from the very first episode... "absof***inglutely".

<Sigh>

So you reckon Ending 3 Patricia? I would have felt a bit sad - and I'm sure there would have been public outcry - but it does have its benefits. It's more in keeping with Carrie, single gal about town, and you're right, she did give him a LOT of chances over those six years. I can handle it as it is, but if they start the on again off again thing again, and string it through a 'trilogy' as they reportedly plan - I will be very cross indeed!

Thanks!

I guess. I would've liked to see her be ok with it. Choosing herself over him, and seeing their relationship for what I think it is - a big game of cat and mouse - pun intended. They have "that relationship" you know the one: Two people who always want the other when they can't have them. If they REALLY loved each other, don't you think they wouldv'e made it work already? Of course, that's just my take on it, and I know everyone else wanted them together. The ending they used was a decent ending.

I agree that if they keep it up, it will suck. They need to either make it work for once and for all or end it for once or for all. Otherwise, I'll be bored and the writers will be insulting my intelligence and taking me for a ride.

I absolutely agree, Patricia. I would hate to see them destroy a good thing like that. I guess we'll have to wait and see what they propose - I just hope it's not marriage!

Yes, we'll have to wait and see, but speculating is oh so fun.

OMG...it could've ended badly! I like how it ended now, BUT didn't like certain aspects of it -- all which you've mentioned.

Secretly... I'm not sure I want Big and Carrie to get married...! They just don't seem the
...marrying kind
...

Lara, I think you and I are on exactly the same page with this! I liked the outline of how they ended up, but it wasn't played out so perfectly. And yeah, I want them to be together, but I have definite misgivings about it all having to end in a Big white wedding. And that would be Big's third time around too!

I just want them to stick to their characters, and give me a story that is completely fresh and enthralling!

Thanks Lara!

Michaelie,

Yes, all things considered, the series could have ended much worse! I thought they did go a little heavy on the cheese factor in the finale, but I do love BIg, so I was okay with that.

Like you girls, if they kept up the on-off aspect of their relationship it would really annoy me!!!

Precisely Kylie! In the end I suppose we got the best we were going to get - though I liked in the extension of the cafe scene how they all react when Charlotte tells them about her daughter, they must have rehearsed the simultaneous dropping of the forks a lot! Lol.

Thank ya kindly, Kylie!
