Ten Years Of 'Sex'

January 14th 2008 19:33
That’s right! It has been almost a decade since HBO hit series Sex and the City entered the world, our hearts, and Kim Cattrall’s girly bits. Exactly one week after the premiere of Sex and the City: The Movie will mark ten years since we met the fabulous glossy posse – ten years since we first mused over Carrie’s philosophical wonderings, delighted in Samantha’s sexual wanderings, fell for Charlotte’s determined romanticism, and revelled in Miranda’s droll cynicism.

In celebration of this anniversary and the upcoming flick – and just because I want to – I will be having a retrospective of sorts of the six seasons one by one. What better way to get you in the mood for Sex? But first things first: a look at our four lovely leading ladies.

Carrie Bradshaw

Carrie Bradshaw
Full Name: Caroline Marie Bradshaw

Played By: Sarah Jessica Parker
Date of Birth: 30/01/66
Occupation: Columnist/Author
Personal Life: In a relationship with Mr Big aka John.
Characteristics: Enquiring, unstructured shoe-lover.
About: Character based on, and sharing initials of, her creator, Candace Bushnell. A true Manhattan girl, Carrie is a fashionista with a tumultuous love-life and highly involved friendships. Her experiences and those of her gal pals form the basis of her columns in the New York Star, which have been made into a book. Carrie also writes for Vogue, and is considered a minor celebrity. She has been with Mr Big (Chris Noth) on and off since the first episode. During that time, she also had serious relationships with Russian artist Aleksandr Petrovsky (Mikhail Baryshnikov), writer Jack Berger (Ron Livingston), and furniture designer Aiden Shaw (John Corbett), whom she cheated on with Big, but later became engaged to. Her love of Manolo Blahnik shoes and Cosmopolitan cocktails has increased the popularity of both.
Quote: “I’ve spent $40, 000 on shoes and I have no place to live? I will literally be the old woman who lived in her shoes.”

Miranda Hobbes

Miranda Hobbes
Played By: Cynthia Nixon
Date of Birth: 23/08/66
Occupation: Lawyer
Personal Life: Married to Steve Brady, with a son, Brady Hobbes.
Characteristics: Practical, type-A cynic.
About: Initially very distrustful and almost masculine, Miranda’s attitudes and style soften over time as she falls in love with bartender (and later proprietor) Steve (David Eigenberg) and becomes a mother. This isn’t a complete turn-around however, as she remains repulsed by unimaginative romantic gestures and trite rituals, and continues to be a straight-talking, hard-working woman of the world. Miranda is extremely successful in her career. She is a Harvard Law graduate, and became partner in her law firm while in her mid-thirties. She has a cat called Fatty, and Steve has a dog called Scout. After Steve and Miranda marry, they take Brady and their pets and move to Brooklyn.
Quote: “Women don’t care. We care about nice arms, great eyes, a big d*ck. I’ve never once heard a woman say: ‘He had such a big, full scrotum’.”

Charlotte York

Charlotte York
Full Name: Charlotte York-Goldenblatt (previously McDougall)
Played By: Kristen Davis
Date of Birth: 14/07/67
Occupation: Art dealer/docent
Personal Life: Married to Harry Goldenblatt, with an adopted daughter.
Characteristics: Conservative, romantic WASP.
About: Charlotte grew up in a wealthy Connecticut family before attending university at Smith College and becoming manager of a Manhattan art gallery. She is a traditionalist who believes in love – and especially marriage – though she does have her own outrageous moments. After her relationship with her first husband, Trey (Kyle MacLachlan) fails, firstly due to his impotence, then her fertility issues, and different desires for their future, Charlotte becomes involved with her divorce lawyer Harry (Evan Handler) who doesn’t fit the profile of her ideal man. Nevertheless, she falls in love with him. She converts to Judaism and marries him, and soon becomes pregnant, though she loses the baby in the first trimester. After this devastation, Charlotte’s spirits are roused again when she is given a gift – a dog she calls Elizabeth Taylor – and she and Harry adopt a daughter from China.
Quote: “We finally have the penis working. I don’t want to scare it.”

Samantha Jones
Samantha Jones - Image courtesy of answers.com

Samantha Jones
Played By: Kim Cattrall
Date of Birth: 10/12/58
Occupation: Publicist
Personal Life: In a relationship with Smith Jerrod.
Characteristics: Independent, open-minded seductress.
About: Samantha Jones is a tough, free-thinking woman from a working-class background. She owns her own business, is sexually liberated and is very open, honest and loyal to her friends. Samantha has many, many lovers, with few real relationships, though she does get more deeply involved with three people before ending up with Smith (Jason Lewis), an actor and much younger man, who manages to overcome Samantha’s emotional walls. These three others are James (James Goodwin), whom she breaks up with because his penis is too small; Maria (Sonia Braga), whom Samantha clashes with over the differences in their attitudes to sex; and Richard (James Remar), a businessman who cheats on Samantha repeatedly. After Samantha meets Smith, she discovers she has breast cancer. She remains strong, eventually overcoming the disease as well as her own reservations about emotional intimacy.
Quote: “I think I have monogamy. I must have caught it from you people!”

So who’s your favourite Sex-ette?

Michaelie, I thought this was just too much self disclosure there for a moment.

Sex strikes me as just a modern day version of Prince Charming, dream on all you modern gals, I'm just an old fashioned one, thank God.

10 years, really? That is some achievement! Maybe you will convert me afterall, Michaelie.......but first I am going to watch season 1 of 'Grey's Anatomy', and see if I can work out what that fuss is all about!

Maybe there should have been a fifth sex-ette......Michahelie??

Hi Michaelie

I can't believe it's been around for ten years. I didn't really get into it for a few years, maybe that's why it doesn't feel that long.

I can't choose which is my favourite (I've thought of this before), I like bits and pieces of them all

Hi Michaelie,

With my very limited knowledge of SATC I actually prefer Miranda. She comes across to me as the most believable.

Will wait until I see reviews of the film before I decide whether to go see it or not as I would have barely seen 3 episodes of the series but could perhaps be interested in seeing a full story in 1 sitting.

Hmmm...*tough* Q... I kinda like a little of each sex-ette. Individually, the sex-ette would drive me a bit *nuts* with their respective idiosyncrasies and neuroticism

Who's your fav?

Jo,

Haha I'd be up for that!

Meanwhile, I shall endeavour to keep the pressure on - you will be a Sex addict before I'm done with you! And I am a partial Grey's convert after a friend convinced me to watch it last season. But by no means die-hard (SATC is better, trust me )

Thanks!

Trace,

So did I (get into it a bit later) and so do I (like bits of them all). They all have really funny moments. If I absolutely had to choose I would say Carrie, but every now and then she annoys me (I think when SJP shines through), so then I would say Miranda. But really - I love them all!

I've never been a fan, but then again, sex for 10 years, what all in one go?, it's a wonder anyone would survive to tell the tale, or did you mean just in fits and starts., I believe in monagamy myself and if it should be catching, that would be great.

Dean,

I liked them all, but I always find season one exciting because of all that is ahead. That said, I wasn't so keen on the breaking of the fourth wall - I suppose they had to stop that anyway because of the direction they took.

I especially find the pilot interesting - how things have changed by the time the second ep got up and running. It feels a lot darker - darker lighting, clothes, makeup. But they set it up so well, particularly Big in that one line - absof***inglutely.

Thanks Dean!

Louie,

Really?! That you taped? Or was it released on VHS?

Well, whatever form they come in they are fantastic to have. I've seen them all so much and I STILL watch them all the time... and watch them on TV.

Thanks Louie

Pamela,

I strongly recommend you get to know the ladies first! It will make it all the better. Of course, you can just do that on Flick Wit

I love Miranda. I think I am a lot like her in a lot of ways, except I would never wear those weird beanies she wears in the first couple of seasons!

Thanks!

Lara - I wrote this big long comment to you and then my internet disconnected and I lost it!

Basically I said I totally agree with you - that their characters seem exaggerated sometimes to define them more clearly and make them funnier - and it works but they can also all be a little bit annoying in different ways. In the end, I waver between Carrie and Miranda - but I do love them all!

Thanks Lara!

Crystal,

There are some people who need to be infected with monogamy methinks! If only it worked like that. Maybe a vaccine should be created. Measles, mumps and infidelity.

Sex - well, we've been going through a dry spell for the last few years, and before that it ran in seasons - I suppose you may call them the 'mating' seasons. But there is more on the horizon. We are far from celibate yet!

Thanks Crystal.

Hiya Michaelie...

Well..as much as she annoys me because she's just so irritating and needy and squealy and neurotic and I could go on and on and on...I do like Carrie the best but I suspect for very shallow reasons.

Her wardrobe. Isn't it wonderful that she can afford to wear vintage Chanel and haute couture Oscar de la Renta, etc on what I assumed was a fairly average salary.

...but (and we're still in character fantasy land here!) mainly for her wit.

I know they're acting but sometimes when SJP delivered her one liners...the rest genuinely looked like they were cracking up! I was surprised to hear that the cast didn't get on (although I believe that it's actually SJP who is the Diva and not Kim).

As Tracy and Lara said...bits and pieces of all of them.

I loved Miranda's character for her "don't f**k with me" attitude. And that last episode when Magda kisses her on the forhead and says "You know love"...I bawled!

Although in theory I like that Sam is supposed to be such a bold and liberated woman...she's not sexy.

Funnily enough...the sexiest one is Charlotte...and I perhaps mean the most sensual one. In terms of how they filmed her sex scenes.

Carrie's only trully sexy sex scene was when she went to the hotel to get away from Aidan knocking the apartment down and Big finds her there and follows her in to the elevator and...well...you remember??

Yes Sam is supposed to be the sex Goddess but her sex scenes were never erotic...they were filmed as if this was the comedy segment.

Why am I focusing on the sex?? Something to do with the title maybe...

Cripes...I can barely put two words together for Rugby at the moment but I'm writing epics here...sorry1

Hope you're well hon...

Hi Dusk and Mich

Yes, that was exactly what a friend and I were saying the other day - how do they afford their lifestyles, especially Carrie, as she doesn't seem to earn as much as Miranda and Sam. How can Carrie afford her wardrobe?

That's about my only gripe with the program. That and how do they find time to sit around with their friends so often?! But if they didn't, I guess we wouldn't have much to watch..

Byeeee

PS I blubbered in that scene as well, Dusk..

Dusk (I love to see you - come write your epics here any old time!) and Trace

Carrie's neediness is very annoying - especially in season one with big, it really makes me cringe. But yeah, she delivers the wit well, like it's really part of her. Mind you, she doesn't have that so much in real life so you can tell then! And I reckon a lot more of the diva stuff is down to her too, I mean, it can't all be one person, but SJP is probably favoured since she is the 'star' and executive producer, etc.

Her wardrobe is often amazing. Those shoes...! I have wondered how she could afford it all too, but remember, she admits she's usually broke, with big card debts. I once worked out her income from little clues here and there, and it was a lot more than I thought. Then she starts working for Vogue and does minor celeb jobs, and sells the book, so she has more then I suppose.

Carrie is rarely sexy, you're right. I think there were a couple of times with Aiden where she was a bit sexy, but Charlotte gets the lion's share. Sam is definitely more comic with her sex scenes, even when she's emotionally involved. I think, generally, the show as a whole isn't sexy. It's more about sex, and fashion and feelings and friendship, and more of all, it's just funny.

They do make a lot of time for having lunch and brekkers and dinner and everything in between. I especially wonder how Miranda manages, (Carrie is freelance and Sam has her own business, and Charlotte isn't working the whole time) particularly since they live and work in different areas.

And that scene with Magda... girls, I sobbed my heart out too! Miranda trying to be so strong, and Magda, who has seen her change into a wife and mother, comes and kisses her and says that.... Lordy.

Thanks ladies! Love chatting with you!

Mich
