SATC On DVD And The Past Life Of Carrie Bradshaw
September 26th 2008 10:07
The DVD of Sex and the City: The Movie – Extended Cut will hit Australia on October 16th, after its launch in New York earlier this week.
Prior to the event, leading lady and executive producer, Sarah Jessica Parker, spoke out about the enormous financial success the film has had, and the likelihood of a sequel. “It's all about the story. If we can't tell a story that's really worthy of an audience, then we won't do it,” she said.
If only that were true, but the big box-office bucks will inevitably have a huge impact on any proposed ideas, including those by Candace Bushnell to release two books aimed at young adults, chronicling Carrie Bradshaw’s teenage years. The prequels, titled The Carrie Diaries, are due for publication in 2010.

Prequels? Looks like she's trying to create another following to follow into SATC. It'll be interesting to see if it works, seeing how different the generations are...
Have you read SATC?
I've not and actually am not interested to but wondered what you thought.

In other circumstances, I would be interested in seeing what came before.
I read probably half of the book, just when I started getting into the series. I just read bits and pieces because I was not yet a die-hard fan. I remember some parts were almost word-for-word, and others were completely different.
I wonder how much Candace Bushnell's real life differed from the alter-ego of her columns, and her columns from the book, and the book from the series?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Who is she kidding: “It's all about the story. If we can't tell a story that's really worthy of an audience, then we won't do it,” she said.
Rhubarb, they'll entice audiences to see the story based on their love for the series and massive marketing tactics. That’s why I saw the film, I knew it wasn’t going to be great but I was curious. Plus, I needed a SATC fix.
I'm interested in a prequel even though I don’t expect it to be good. I’m so fickle that I’m pretty sure I’d see it.
Sometimes when I’m watching the series I’ve wondered where did they all meet as they are so diverse, what was the common link? And apart from when Miranda’s mum died, why do they not mention families? Where are they and what are they like? And the last one and the biggie: how did Carrie get her job?!
It’s interesting hearing what you thought about the books, Mich. I’ve wondered what they were like. Would you describe them as good fluff or crap fluff? I don’t expect them to be in Marian Keyes’ realm or am I being too harsh? Are they holiday books?
I’d better end now as I’m starting to interrogate you!!
Great post as always, my mind is pondering....

Is your brain on overdrive tonight, woman? Lol. You're so funny.
Herself I think. She's trying to pretend she's making 'art' and not just millions.
As you know, I have the same outlook on this as you, and I have the same cynical interest in a prequel as you. You can't glean much about the characters' pasts from the series, only bits dropped into conversation, and even then they quite often contradict each other.
The books (from what I have read and remember) where grittier than what we are up to now, in keeping with the first two seasons, but in a way, more realistic, I suppose since Bushnell was for the most part chronicling her own life as an NY party girl.
I have read a couple of others by Bushnell, and they all had the same feel to them. I think bringing SATC to TV/film both gave life to and destroyed something of the story.
Marian Keyes always wins hands down - but on a side note, do you know I have been rereading a couple of the oldies and they now seem lacking in comparison to the newest ones? I had previously thought they were the better ones, from tainted memory, but can see now when I read them in a row, how she has matured.
Back to SATC - I'm thinking of getting the first and soon-to-be books, so will let you know what I think of each lot.
Feel free to interrogate me any time.
