'Sex' Stars Become Revealing As Premiere Approaches

April 18th 2008 08:29
More details from the personal lives of the stars of Sex and the City are coming to light as the countdown to the big screen release draws near. First, Kristin Davis’ sex tape from her hellion days emerges; now Cynthia Nixon announces that she was diagnosed with breast cancer… several years ago. And to top it all off, Evan Handler is now speaking out about his own experience with cancer as a young man. The timing of these scandals and announcements seems somewhat suspect.

Nixon, who plays Miranda Hobbes in the series and the upcoming flick Sex and the City: The Movie, has this week revealed on Good Morning America that after a routine mammogram in 2006, a cancerous mass was found in her breast. The lump was removed, and Nixon underwent six-and-a-half weeks of radiation therapy, before making a complete recovery. “I didn’t want to make it public while I was going through it”, the actress explained. Fair enough – but announcing it while on the publicity trail comes across as more than a little shrewd, especially as fellow cast member, Handler, who plays Charlotte’s husband, Harry, also went public this week with details of his battle with acute myeloid leukaemia in his mid-twenties.

Handler was diagnosed with the almost-always fatal disease at 24, and was given only a few years to live. He lost his hair for good, but not his will to survive, and at 47, Handler shows no signs of stopping. He is releasing his second memoir It’s Only Temporary: The Good News and the Bad News of Being Alive on May 1st, a book Handler says chronicles his experiences in a way not dissimilar from Sex and the City, only “lived and told by a man”. Funny that.

If they're revealing all those things to hype up the movie, that's just sooo sad. :/

Yeah, I reckon, Toni. I hope that isn't why, but it just seems too calculated to me.

Hope you're all better!

No worries. Sleep is the best thing for it - that and plenty of fabulous pharmaceuticals.

Calculating is an understatement, mercenary comes to mind Michaelie, served cold and with callousness.

Raven - you refering to them or to me? Lol.

I keep wondering if I'm being too cynical, but with all these revelations cropping up at such an imperitive time... really makes me wonder.

Thanks, Raven

Hi Mich

Funnily enough, I'm not feeling so cynical even though it's early on a Sat morning and I have work to do...

Gosh, that's a lot to go through at 24...how awful.

But I do get fed up of stars releasing books just because they're famous...or ‘creating’ perfume...or lingerie...blah blah blah.

Hmmm, turns out I had some lingering cynicism after all!!!

Trace,

Yes, it's terrible - but I just hate the thought that they are revealing this at this particular time in order to draw more attention to their movie/book.

I know what you mean about the perfume trend! How much do they actually contribute, apart from their name? That's the way of it though!

Thanks!

Hi Mich

Maybe they add their inidividual smells when they create their perfumes. That's a delightful thought isn't it?

In that case, let's hope Pete Doherty doesn't make one.

Hmmm...what a clever, clever ploy publicity strategy... One has to wonder why they had to do that...shouldn't the movie/stars sell itself...? Is it telling us something else...our *worst* fear...!

The timing was pretty strange, Lara. What I don't get is why they are doing any of this at all - the movie is hardly low-profile...

Definitely makes me wonder...

Thank you

Michaelie...you come off in this column as an uninformed twat - but no offense intended. I "went public" with my leukemia diagnosis the day it happened in 1985, then published a first memoir detailing every inch of it in 1996. That's twelve years ago. The book is called "Time On Fire". It's a book that's helped a lot of people, as will the new one. Your desire to turn my honorable efforts to help those who might follow behind into something greedy and ugly is shameful.

All the best,

Evan Handler

Hello Evan, I refer to your bravery and the fact that this is your second memoir in the final paragraph.

Hollywood is Hollywood, and the world is what it is. Altruism abounds, it's true, but rarely in its most pure form. Usually it's cut with something a bit less ephemeral, and that is, for the most part, not a problem.

It's the formula that's wearing, and the insistence that selflessness precludes self interest. If we were honest, we could admit that the two work in unison - and even harmony - more often than we expect.

Thanks for the comment, you self-righteous prick.

I'm a great fan!
