I bought Sex and the City: The Movie – Extended Cut on the day of its Australian release with the faint wan hope that my initial cinema-based impression was off the mark. If anything, I have come closer to detesting the flick with each subsequent viewing.

There are six extra minutes in the extended cut, and they serve no real purpose. Some of the deleted scenes which are not included in the cut have slightly more in the way of entertainment value, but still not to the standard of the series.

The special features include an overview of the fashion featured in the film, the making of the soundtrack, and ‘A Conversation with Sarah Jessica Parker and Michael Patrick King’ – a tedious affair in which the triple-named pair very earnestly kiss each others’ arses.

The DVD of Sex and the City: The Movie – Extended Cut will hit Australia on October 16th, after its launch in New York earlier this week.

Prior to the event, leading lady and executive producer, Sarah Jessica Parker, spoke out about the enormous financial success the film has had, and the likelihood of a sequel. “It's all about the story. If we can't tell a story that's really worthy of an audience, then we won't do it,” she said.

If only that were true, but the big box-office bucks will inevitably have a huge impact on any proposed ideas, including those by Candace Bushnell to release two books aimed at young adults, chronicling Carrie Bradshaw’s teenage years. The prequels, titled The Carrie Diaries, are due for publication in 2010.

In the rocking wake of the Sex and the City movie, it seems Kim Cattrall has been devising a strategy for how the projected sequel can work to her best advantage, pitching a concept to producers in which Cattrall’s character of Samantha steps into the principal role.

A bold move by the ambitious Cattrall, but not one likely to bear fruit, considering the power wielded by current lead actress, executive producer, and arch-nemesis of Cattrall, Sarah Jessica Parker.

SJP has reportedly threatened to walk away from any such doings, taking her producer credit and considerable backing in the fashion world with her, along with co-stars Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis to boot.

Maybe Cattrall is doing her a favour, and SJP should stay away from the Sex flicks – after all, husband Matthew Broderick allegedly had an affair with a twenty-five year old youth worker during filming of the last one – but while SJP is said to be dragging her heels with the film, it isn’t for that reason. Apparently she doesn’t want to rush into things and wind up disappointing loyal fans. Well, SJP, that horse has bolted.

Other rumours surrounding the sequel’s plot suggest that Cynthia Nixon’s character, Miranda, will realize she is a lesbian, unimaginatively echoing Nixon’s real life.

'Sex' No One Night Stand

July 13th 2008 17:33
HBO has unofficially confirmed that Sex and the City: The Movie will not be a mere fling. Instead, it will devolve into a sordid affair that will no doubt drag on long after the love has died, propelled by foolishly fickle flickers of lust and the hunt for another mind-blowing explosion of ka-ching.

No true Sex and the City fan could resist seeing the movie, despite all reservations, which is precisely why I made a reservation of my own – for premium seats on the first day of screening in Australia.

I walked into the theatre with low expectations. From the clips I had seen, and storyline snippets I had read, I had a fairly good idea I was bound for disappointment. So, was I disappointed? Hard to say. The flick was basically what I had imagined it would be, so there was no great discrepancy between the reality of the film and what was anticipated. In a way, this is a good thing: it was no worse than I had predicted. On the down side: I wasn’t Carried Away

Six: Orgasmic and Fabulous

May 25th 2008 06:19
A very mixed bag is Season Six of Sex and the City, with arguably some of the best and worst episodes. The finale caused much speculation everywhere as the issue of how it was all going to turn out was hotly debated. In the end, I suppose they couldn’t please everyone, and while the majority may have wanted Carrie and Big together, the execution of the episode left a lot to be desired.

The first reviews have hit, and even if you discount Oprah’s opinion right off the bat, things are sounding promising – in a non-specific kind of way.

The Fox News review by Roger Friedman promises all will be swell, but offers no insight into why. The only thing that stood out to me was this: “Don’t we worried by all the upscale affluence and opulence. King very smartly has anticipated the current economic mood in this country. There’s a subtle surprise in the third act that addresses it

With the original theme song of Sex and the City still able to make a woman’s head snap to attention within the first bar, it’s no wonder the soundtrack of the upcoming film has been made a priority.

As expected, new movie cast member, Jennifer Hudson, who will play Carrie Bradshaw’s assistant, Louise, will have a singing role to go with her acting one. According to writer/director Michael Patrick King, Hudson will be belting out her track ‘All Dressed Up in Love’ as the end credits roll

There's plenty suddenly floating around so I will give them to you in point form. Some are small and unconfirmed; some are huge and straight from the horse’s mouth. (No, I am not having a go at SJP!) So, without further ado:

More details from the personal lives of the stars of Sex and the City are coming to light as the countdown to the big screen release draws near. First, Kristin Davis’ sex tape from her hellion days emerges; now Cynthia Nixon announces that she was diagnosed with breast cancer… several years ago. And to top it all off, Evan Handler is now speaking out about his own experience with cancer as a young man. The timing of these scandals and announcements seems somewhat suspect.

Diarise it, ladies. Sex and the City: The Movie is shaping up to be a two hour plus mega-session – how else will they fit all the rumoured crises in? And it looks like it’s coming Down Under (ahem) on June 5th. Yep, according to Hoyts, we Aussies are going to be out of the Sex loop for about a week, unless we all fly to Cannes or New York, the two places tipped for the world premiere. I foresee a lot of pirating on the sly PCs.

They may have finished filming, but it seems the acting is just beginning, with the Sex and the City girls throwing themselves into full publicity mode – despite persistent rumours of catty quarrels.

There has been much talk over the last week of a very personal new-release film starring Kristin Davis. I, for one, am very suspicious. It’s not that I doubt the woman in the video is Davis – the resemblance is too striking, even if we are not so used to seeing prudish ‘Charlotte’ in such a position – it’s the timing of it all that is giving me pause.
