RE: Sexiest Movie Moments
November 7th 2007 19:15
I like 20 to 01 on Channel Nine. I find it enjoyable. So when I saw Bewigged Bert was presenting a new episode entitled ‘Sexiest Movie Moments’, I thought it would be well worth watching. And it was – but it also annoyed this post out of me.
There are several reasons I watch the show: I like lists – I have lists for everything. I like writing lists, I like crossing things off lists, and I like having things ordered on a list. You may have noticed. Also, I take pleasure in the commentary on the show, particularly from Tony Martin, Amanda Keller and Peter Berner. It amuses me. And I enjoy comparing my opinions and memories with the ones featured during the programme. Usually they will be at least relatively the same.
Not so this time! The countdown mainly consisted of scenes involving women, which is fine, a few of the ones they mentioned do rate for me too – but what do they dredge up of men? Austen Powers and Tom Cruise in his socks. Not good!
Here is the 20 to 01 list, with my thoughts added, of course.
#20 Ghost: The pottery wheel scene – Much as I detest Demi, I did love this movie. However, this scene is only allowable, according to me, because of The Righteous Brothers’ ‘Unchained Melody’ accompaniment.
#19 American Beauty: Mena hits the roof – Loved this movie also, and I think the fantasy was very important to the whole story, but sexy? I don’t know. She’s too skinny, and maybe I was too focused on what this scene was saying about the character of Lester.
#18 True Lies: The bed-post pole-dance – No. No. No. I thought Jamie Lee Curtis looked awful, I didn’t really like the movie, and if anything, I found this scene comical.
#17 10: Running on the beach – Yes! Yes! Yes! This one I agreed with. Bo Derek is stunning and this bore a whole batch of pitiful imitations.
#16 Grease: Sandy at the carnival – Olivia Newton John was hot stuff in this scene, and the bad-girl-but-a-good-girl-at-h eart thing was appealing. I loved Johnny in it too, but no mention of him on the show.
#15 Austen Powers: Walking about naked – Of course it was funny, but that’s not the point!
#14 The Graduate: Mrs Robinson’s schoolboy seduction – This would have to be included for the sheer potency of her mature sexuality.
#13 Who Framed Roger Rabbit?: Jessica Rabbit – More a character than a ‘moment’ but I would have to agree. With those animated curves and Kathleen Turner’s voice she was irresistible.
#12 The Blue Lagoon: Hormones hit – About the only thing that Brooke Shields did that was any good. Don’t know about the bloke and the fact that they were meant to be cousins!
#11 Risky Business: Dancing in Undies – I can’t stand Tom Cruise, though he can be great on screen, and was more bearable in his younger years. But this cannot be classed as one of the sexiest movie moments. No bloody way.
#10 Titanic: Drawing Rose and the hand on the window – Definitely two of the better scenes in the film. I hate the “I’m flying!” bit.
#9 Cool Hand Luke: The car wash – Yep, I get this. The frustration of the prisoners is palpable.
#8 When Harry Met Sally: Would you like an orgasm with that? – This scene was hilarious and unforgettable, not sexy.
#7 Mask of Zorro: Sword fight strip – I hate this stupid movie. Catherine Zeta Jones is stunning and there is a connection, but it doesn’t rank in the top twenty.
#6 The Fabulous Baker Boys: Singing on the piano – Michelle Pfeiffer really does it, and she does it well.
#5 Basic Instinct: Crossing legs – This rates, not because of the flashing, but because of what it signifies. Sharon Stone was so provocatively dangerous, and this scene heralded a very distinctive power flip in her favour.
#4 Seven Year Itch: The subway vent – Uh-huh. It’s hard to beat Marilyn Monroe for sex appeal, and everything about this was done to perfection.
#3 Thelma and Louise: Brad Pitt – No, I don’t get it, especially in this role. He was too scrawny and I hated his hair, and he didn’t do anything special as far as I could tell.
#2 Dr No: Walking out of the ocean – This is certainly up there, but I was disappointed at the surfeit of women and lack of genuinely great men by this stage, and so would have been more interested in seeing Sean Connery get the nod.
#1 From Here To Eternity: Kissing in the waves – Yes, but not for top position. If they tried to do this kind of thing again in a movie these days, I would probably gag.
Some I would have included, apart from the ones above which I have ‘okayed’, would be the wake-up kiss in Rear Window, the reunion beside the house in Brokeback Mountain for sheer violent passion, Rhett carrying Scarlett up the stairs in Gone With The Wind, the vampire love scene in The Hunger, hair-washing in The Bourne Identity, the illicit affair in The Departed, spark-setting seduction in Dangerous Liaisons and the hypnotic and erotic danger of Venice in The Comfort of Strangers.
What do you think of the 20 to 01 list? What would be on yours?

Bert Newton would be great teamed up with a straight guy again. He always stole the show from Don Lane etal, when he played second fiddle. I don't think the quiz shows and 20 to 1suit his personality at all. Just doesn't seem happy doing that. Cheers.
ETA: Sorry, little bit off track there. We're talking romance, not comedy.

That's an interesting list, I haven't seen the program, maybe I'll have to look...but Bert sort of bothers me. One minute I quite like him and then the other he's annoying.
I thought of Samsara, have you seen it? It's a visual feast, here's my review if you feel like having a look.
Great post, I'm sure I'll be back with more thoughts....

I would put Malena on that list, and In The Realm of The Senses, a japanese movie from the 70s that was well ahead of its time..

Ursula Andress in the surf, yeah.
Jessica Rabbit, ummmm, yeah?
But otherwise what a lame list!!!
I could think of a dozen foreign movies with more sex appeal in their title credit sequences than this softcock selection, pardon my French.
Sex and Lucia ... now that had some hot stuff!
Wong Kar-Wai's Fallen Angels ...
But it seems the list is fairly Hollywood-centric. So what about the fridge food scene in 9-and-a-half-weeks? The movie was pretty terrible, but that scene was memorable.

The fact that Bert was presenting that list makes it doomed from the start! Poor Bert, I just love to hate him
I'm a big lister too. Once, I had so many lists, I had to make a list of my lists! I called it 'List of Lists'. Be careful, lists seem to multiply all on their own

That's OK you can talk whatever you like! Bert has definitely gone downhill of late, and I'm really glad that Family Feud show was axed - terrible. He's really not in his element and it's not reflecting well on him.
Roger Rabbit scared me the first time I saw it, when the boot died! But I really like it too.
Thanks Rosemary!

Yeah Bert's really been dividing his audiences lately. But I do like this show, unless they do sporting moments or something, though I still like the commentry from a few of the comedians they have on.
I haven't seen that movie, but I will be looking at your review soonest!
Thanks!

Never heard you wax romantic before! Lol. Good to know there's killing and stuff in there too - and yes, Ursula Andress, very sexy.

Mabe Malena should have replaced The Blue Lagoon for teenage sexuality?
Thanks for the comment.

Film & TV on DVD
Cool Hand Luke, 7 Year Itch, Dr No, The Graduate, Roger Rabbit and Here to Eternity are not bad choices. The rest of Berts selection did little for the groin.
Like Bryn I would have included a number of foreign films that manage to ooze sexual appeal without the western stigma or false staging.
For me its a travesty not one film Noir femme Fatale is featured....what is sexier than a bad woman using her feminine wiles to manipulate murder like....
William Hurt smashing the window to get to Kathleen Turner in Body Heat.
Lauren Bacall in the Big Sleep when she walks down the stairs and saunters up to Humphrey Bogart, later whispering that famous "lip whistle blowing" line.
Linda Fiorenti weaving her spell in The last Seduction.
Gina Gershon and Meg Tilly meeting in Bound.
Any way thats just a few of the noir moments I find titillating, their are just way to many sexy scenes from the old school, when it took some inventive flare to insert it in while appeasing censors.

HAHAHA! Mais oui, bien sur! (Please excuse my French, also.)
Sex and Lucia! How could I forget? The flash-back scenes are brilliant, and Paz Vega... Wonderful. Definitely up there.
Haven't seen the other two...

PS Thank you for sharing your liking of lists. Some people find my penchant for list-making odd. I feel less odd now. Do you ever make a list of things to do, and add something you've already done, just so that you can have the instant gratification of crossing it off? I do.
Have I just made myself an oddity again...? Lol.

What do you prefer? Comedy? Horror? Action? Sci Fi? I wonder how much the genres we are drawn to say about our personalities...
Thanks!

Thank you! Neither do I! Especially in that movie. Yeah, he was all muscly, but... meh. Doesn't do much for me. Never has. He may be good-looking, but he is not sexy!

I'm LISTening. Fancy calling your list of lists 'The List of Lists'! That's just wacky! Lol.
All my lists live in a book of lists, so that I don't lose track of them and end up going balLISTic. If I lost my book of lists I would feel decidedly LISTless.
Thanks Jo!

I was waiting for someone to suggest Bound!
I haven't seen The Last Seduction.
I reckon there would be a few Kathleen Turner moments which would be up there - Body Heat at the very top of the pile - plus in the cave in Romancing the Stone, even though I couldn't stand the movie, and maybe when she plays China Blue in Crimes of Passion.
Thanks JD!

Perhaps not sexy - but tender - how about Fay Wray and the original scene from King Kong when he peers through the window and later gently cradles and protects.
Weirdly juxatposed - but tender none the less.
Nice post.

Nothing says sexy like a great hairy beast with anger issues.
This may reflect badly on me.

I do put things on lists that are already done, or I'm doing at the time of writing the list, just so I can cross it off. I am eccentric like you too.

As the name would suggest! No I haven't seen it, but I know Naveen Andrews is in it, and I love him from The English Patient.
I think I'll have to add this to my 'list (another one Bryn!) of things to watch'.
