Curious About 'Benjamin Button'
March 29th 2008 06:33
David Fincher’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ is intriguing me already. Due for release at the end of the year, the film stars Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett in a dark and unconventional love story.
Benjamin Button (Pitt) is born 80-years-old in 1919 and gets progressively younger as the years pass. If that wasn’t tricky enough, thirty years after his birth, Button falls in love with a 30-year-old woman, Daisy (Blanchett), causing many bizarre complications as time moves forward and the pair age in different directions.
I don’t quite understand how Fincher is going to pull this off – putting Brad Pitt’s face on a baby and making it look both elderly and convincing – but with a budget of $150 million, I’m sure he’ll have a fair stab at it. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button also stars Julia Ormond, Jason Flemyng, Tilda Swinton and Elle Fanning, with a cameo by Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, if you can believe it.

Gosh, this film sounds intriguing on so many levels. I hadn’t heard of it before your post and just looked it up.
I’d say that having David Fincher as the director means the film has a good chance of working well.
I’ll be watching this one. Thanks for the heads up,
Tracy

I'd be a bit worried if Fincher wasn't at the helm. Not only should he give it a better chance of working, but he seems to direct Brad Pitt better than most.
I'm quite excited about it really. Sounds so very Round the Twist!
Thanks for stopping by - we'll have to compare notes once it comes out.

Yes, Fincher and Pitt have worked really well together before, so I'm definitely interested in this new project.
It sounds like a bit of a mind-boggler, I like that challenge.
I wish it was coming out sooner...

Mind-boggler is right!
It actually WAS supposed to come out earlier but they keep pushing it back, the beasts.

You and me both. The photos coming off the set look pretty good, but we all know they can be misleading as to how it all comes together as a motion picture.
Guess we'll just have to wait and see. I'm tipping it'll be good, and I hope I'm right.
Great to see you.

Lol, doesn't it just? I am too. It will be so interesting to see how they convincingly portray the same people over eighty years. I hope the FX are better in this than some movies I could mention...
Thanks for the fly-by.

Me too, am very intrigued by it for so many reasons. Yes, it's still an adaptation, but at least it's something interesting coming out of Hollywood! So come December, I'm there.
Thanks!

I have been holding my breath for this one ever since I first heard the project was going forward.
Fincher is an exceptional visionary who aside from a few missteps (Panic Room) has always exceeded my expectations.
If anyone can bring such a complex novel to screen it is him...afterall on paper who knew that Fight Club would be as coherent and complete.

How weird does he look?! Not such a heart-throb here, though I can't say he's ever done much for me.
Hopefully the big bucks will help and not hinder, as is sometimes the case. I have faith in Fincher anyway - and yes, the casting of Cate can only help.
Thanks!

I'm a great fan of Fincher too - though you couldn't be more right about Panic Room. More hits than misses I think, and when you've pulled off something like Fight Club, you know you've got it in you. I reckon he'll do well with this - dark and quirky is his forte. I'm really looking forward to it.
Thanks JD, great to see you!

I'm very interested in this one, as David Fincher is one of my favourite directors, and Brad Pitt looks mighty fine. As you mention, David and Brad seem to have a great working relationship which really shows up on-screen.
Hope you're well.

Fincher is a favourite of mine too, and he does bring out the best in Brad I think, which is pretty good, because Brad really seems pretty dense to me.
I am very well, thank ya. Hope you are too!
