The Devil... Is Anne Hathaway
August 25th 2007 03:04
What do you get when you make a highly entertaining novel into a film with a drop-dead gorgeous cast? A highly lifeless movie, apparently. Anne Hathaway is still playing princess – and becoming a right royal pain in the sceptre. Her wan, uninspired performance in The Devil Wears Prada leeches the sass and humour from her character, Andy Sacks, making her seem both contrived and undistinguished.
Luckily, resuscitation is achieved by the dazzling ‘Devil’, Miranda, played by Meryl Streep, and the bitch of the bureau, Emily, played by Emily Blunt, girlfriend of crooner Michael Bublé. Together they kick-start the heart of the story, though even they can do nothing about the internal injuries inflicted by the irritatingly trite Hathaway.
The tale purportedly echoes the experiences of Lauren Weisberger, the author of the book the film was adapted from. She worked for a short time as assistant to Anna Wintour, notorious editor-in-chief of Vogue, just as her protagonist Andy schleps for Runway mistress, Miranda Priestly.
Although it has its flaws – and one in particular – all in all, the movie is light entertainment, something to distract yourself with while ironing, running on the treadmill or waxing your legs. If, however, you can manage it one handed and/or while pounding a rubber conveyor belt, I heartily suggest you reroute your attention with the book instead.
